Health Academy – Public Health Solutions

Yassna Ahmadi, Staff Writer

For a couple weeks now, the Health Academy Junior class has been presented with a course on public health. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, Ms. B and Ms. Jackie from Public Health Solutions speak to the students about the social determinants of health, health inequities, public health careers, community life expectancies, etc.

Health equity is defined as a fair opportunity to live a long, healthy life no matter your identity or social condition. “-Isms” such as racism, sexism, homophobia, etc. all apply to certain situations, leading to health injustices. Students were also taught the differences between empathy and equality. They participated in a very interesting activity in order to realize how privileged their lives are compared to the lives of others.

Over the summer, a student from one of the two Human Body Systems classes will be selected to have a paid internship with the organization. The students have learned that health should not only be determined as being in a fit condition but also as having a healthy mind and soul. Overall, the Health Academy students have really enjoyed studying about the necessities of being involved in a healthy community.
