Sonic The Hedgehog Movie Review:

Sonic The Hedgehog is a fantasy adventure film based on the video game franchise published by Sega. The film was directed by Jeff Fowler. The film stars Ben Schwartz (voice of Sonic), Jim Carrey (Doctor Robotnik), James Marsden, Tika Sumpter, Natasha Rothwell, Adam Pally, and Neal McDonough. Sonic The Hedgehog premiered at the Paramount Theater on January 25, 2020, and was theatrically released in the US on February 14, 2020.

At the beginning of the movie, we see Sonic in his homeworld. Sonic is an extraterrestrial blue hedgehog who can run at extremely fast speeds. His guardian Longclaw the Owl tells him to hide his powers, but Sonic runs across the world at full speed, resulting in a tribe of echidnas trying to abduct him. Longclaw gave Sonic a bag of rings that open portals to other planets, using one to send to Earth while she holds off the echidnas. Sonic spends the next ten years living in the small town of Green Hills, Montana. He spies on the local sheriff, Tom Wachowski, and his veterinarian wife Maddie.

Sonic starts to feel lonely because he has no friends, and he gets jealous of watching other people have friends. One night, he plays baseball by himself, and after realizing his loneliness, he becomes upset and starts running around the field. The energy Sonic emits creates an electromagnetic pulse that knocks out all the power in the Pacific Northwest. The United States Department of Defense enlists a robot/human hybrid and scientific genius Dr. Robotnik to help discover the cause of the outage. Robotnik discovers and tracks Sonic, who was hiding in the Wachowskis’ shed. Just as Sonic was about to open a portal to escape, Sonic is discovered and shot with a tranquilizer by Tom, causing him to drop his bag of rings through the portal, which leads to San Francisco. After Sonic wakes up, Tom agrees to help Sonic recover the rings. Robotnik invades the house, but Sonic and Tom escape. Robotnik sees one of Sonic’s quills and declared Tom a domestic terrorist.

Tom and Sonic evade Robotnik and bond on their journey to San Francisco. Tom learns that Sonic still hasn’t made a real friend. Sonic doesn’t agree with Tom’s decision to leave Green Hills for his new job in San Francisco, arguing that he is leaving his true friends. Dr. Robotnik continues to chase Sonic and injures him with a drone before they got to San Francisco, where Tom reunites with Maddie. Maddie helps to awaken Sonic, and the three travel to the Transamerica Pyramid, where Sonic’s bag of rings landed. Robotnik and his robots attack them at the top, but Sonic uses the rings to teleport Tom and Maddie back to Green Hills before taking on Robotnik. Using the power of Sonic’s quill, Robotnik gains supersonic speed and pursues Sonic across the world.

Robotnik and Sonic’s fight make it back to Green Hills, where Robotnik overpowers Sonic. Tom hops in the fight and Sonic regains his strength after Tom mentions that they are friends. Sonic regains the energy that Robotnik is using. Sonic uses a ring (with the help of Tom) sending Robotnik to a planet full of large mushrooms. After they defeat Robotnik, Tom and Maddie decide to stay in Green Hills and allow Sonic to live with them. The US government erases all evidence of this incident. But, Robotnik still has Sonic’s quill and is beginning to plot revenge.

All in all, I rate this movie a 10/10.
