The popular fighting game phenomenon ‘Super Smash Bros. Ultimate’, released on December 7, 2018, for the Nintendo Switch, now holds the record for the best-selling fighting game in history! As of September 30, 2019, according to Nintendo’s half-year financial report, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate has sold an amazing total of 15.71 million units since launch.

The previous record for the best-selling fighting game was held by Capcom’s 1991 title ‘Street Fighter II’, sitting at an estimated 15.5 million units after 7 different versions of the game were released. To put that into perspective, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate has sold at least 210,000 more units than Street Fighter II and it only took less than a year for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate to claim that record!

Additionally, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is also the fastest-selling Nintendo game of all time, selling an estimated 12.08 million units within its first 3 weeks of release.

Furthermore, the entire Super Smash Bros. franchise is also the most popular fighting game series by sales alone, sitting at an estimated total of 53.03 million copies sold over the past 2 decades since the debut of the first game in the series in 1999 for the Nintendo 64! For comparison’s sake, the total sales for Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat, Tekken, and Dragon Ball are all currently between 45 million-47 million sales.

With the release of additional content to the already vast game via DLC (downloadable content) updates, I am confident that Super Smash Bros. Ultimate will continue to hold the record for the best-selling fighting game for years to come!
