In December 2014, when she was just 16 years old, Clairo began independently releasing lo-fi songs on Bandcamp. Upon its release in August 2017, her song “Pretty Girl” became a viral hit, resulting in FADER Label signing a contract with her and releasing her debut, major-label EP, diary 001, in May 2018. The EP was met with critical acclaim, and interest in Clairo began to rise in the period leading up to the release of her debut studio album, Immunity, in early August.

Immunity follows the same lo-fi, bedroom pop-esque sounds of diary 001 with elements of trip-hop and indie rock added to create a stronger, more realized sound. Her soft and delicate vocals hold a pearl-like quality, bathing the listener in auditory white light, cleansing them of all impurities.

According to Clairo in an interview with Coup De Main magazine, the primary theme of the record is finding the “silver lining” in the many ups and downs of life in order to reach the “light at the end of the tunnel”. Several tracks, like “Bags” and “Sophia”, borrow from her own personal experiences, taking their negative connotations and flipping them around into something positive and uplifting.

On “Sophia”, Clairo, who is openly bisexual, opens her heart to a female love-interest. The track touches upon Clairo’s own struggles with her sexuality, asserting that being in love with someone of the same sex “shouldn’t feel like a crime”. She stated she wanted the song to be “empowering” and “celebratory” because a person’s sexuality “should be celebrated”. Love is a beautiful thing, and people should never feel ashamed for falling in love, regardless of their sex or gender preferences.

Now, I’ll be honest, I wasn’t impressed with Clairo at first. I couldn’t seem to see the star quality that everyone else saw in her, however, after listening to this album, my opinion was completely changed. Immunity is a beautifully constructed body of work, and Clairo reminds me of a little fairy whose voice has the ability to heal and purify. She truly is a pearl. Immunity is available now across all online and streaming platforms.
