Queer singer-songwriter and visual artist Mood Killer has swiftly risen on the underground pop music scene throughout the past year, joining Charli XCX and Dorian Electra for a series of performances around the U.S. and Europe in 2018.

Their debut EP, Liquify, was released in early July, and while it may only contain six tracks, it certainly doesn’t fall short.

Liquify is bold and provocative, combining elements of industrial electronic music with bubblegum bass to create a style that juxtaposes itself between the hard, abrasive sounds and the cute, more “pop-esque” sounds. It’s a hybrid genre reflective of Mood Killer’s unique personal style and avant-garde aesthetic and kind of sounds like how I imagine cotton candy-flavored gasoline would smell if it actually existed.

Sex and sexuality play a big part on Liquify in terms of theme, and the entire project feels like one big sexual innuendo, especially with songs like “Go Hard”, whose lyrics are rather phallic in nature.

The strongest track on the EP is the second single, “Cam Boy”. A somber track about not wanting someone to get too attached and a commentary on cybersex and webcam sites, which have become popular among the Queer community in recent times, Mood Killer treats a gentleman caller as if he were just another face on a screen.

With such an unforgettable sound and image, Mood Killer has definitely made their mark on the underground pop music scene. Liquify is available now across all online and streaming platforms.
