Australian producer Donatachi has a growing profile on the underground pop music scene and is best known for his work with Boy Sim, That Kid, and Ayesha Erotica.

In early July, he released his debut EP, Taste, a short and sweet collection of singles from the past year that’ll surely give you a sugar rush, as it’s literally cotton candy in the form of music. It sounds like how strawberry ice cream tastes and feels like being in Candyland!

The fourth single, “Crush On U”, definitely reflects this concept the best. It’s a collaboration with American singer Slayyyter, who sings about a summer crush worth acting a little reckless for, even though she’ll most likely never see him again once the summer’s over. It’s a cute, sexy, teenage dream and everything you could possibly ask for in a song between these two frequent collaborators — Donatachi previously produced Slayyyter’s self-leaked song “Sweet 16” with American singer Ravenna Golden and “Celebrity” from her upcoming debut mixtape.

Taste, as a whole, is very much inspired by PC Music; a London-based record label whose recording artists are known for their experimental, electronic sound; specifically, the work of Scottish producer SOPHIE, whose influence can be heard throughout every track:

“Do What I Want” with Australian singer Evangeline and “Crush On U” contain samples of water dripping; “In Love” with Rosebud Leach, “Precious Metal” with Rromarin, and “DDR” feature a strong electronic bass; and “Taste” incorporates the sound of popping bubbles — all characteristics of SOPHIE’s work.

But while the songs may be reminiscent of SOPHIE and PC Music, Donatachi has taken these elements and reinvented them, morphing them into something of his own creation.

Taste is available now across all online and streaming platforms.
