German-born pop diva Kim Petras has been a prominent figure in the underground pop music scene ever since she first emerged in 2017 with her hit single, “I Don’t Want It All”. Now, two years later, Petras has received even more notoriety with the release of her debut studio album, Clarity.

Her most personal work to date, the album’s lyrics pertain to themes of heartbreak, sex, and partying. Standout tracks include the lead single, “Icy”; the disco-inspired “Sweet Spot”; and the seductive, electro pop banger “Personal Hell”. “Icy” is especially worth noting. A passionate song about moving on after a breakup, the electronic production paired with a smooth delivery by Petras makes this track one that begs to be played over and over again.

Part of what makes this album so special is the way she’s able to blend pop with other genres, such as hip-hop and R&B, while maintaining an authentic, cohesive sound. It’s also just really fun to listen to!

The only issue I have with this album is the way it was marketed. Starting in late April, Petras dropped nine of the album’s twelve tracks as promotional singles every week leading up the album’s release in late June. While I thoroughly enjoyed every song, in the end, only three tracks were left unheard. I, and many fans alike, felt as if we’d already listened to the entire album before it was even out.

That aside, Kim Petras has undoubtedly earned her title as the new princess of pop with this album. Clarity isn’t just a pop record filled with bouncy bubblegum bops, it’s a celebration of her journey and mainstream success as a transgender artist. It’s her victory lap. Clarity is available across all online and streaming platforms.
