What’s going on in space?

a whole lot…

Gina Gallia, Staff Writer

Meteors (aka shooting stars) are famous for their beauty in the night’s sky. Large groups of meteors create meteor showers which are a popular and appreciated sight by many. According to Google, a meteor shower is a number of meteors that appear to radiate from one point in the sky at a particular date each year, due to the Earth regularly passing through a field of particles at that position in its orbit. On the night of November 17, the rare Leonid meteor shower hit Earth once again.

Here is an image from the Leonid meteor shower of 1998 :

If you missed out, don’t worry! Because on January 4th the Quadrantids meteor shower will be at its peak! It’s another major meteor shower and the best time to view it is at about midnight in an area without artificial light. The Pinole Valley backroads are the perfect place to see it!

fun facts about space (and some… not so fun)

  • If the sun were to burn out or disappear, the Earth would freeze over in less than 9 minutes.
  • Space is completely silent
  • The number of stars in the known universe is uncountable!
  • The Apollo astronauts’ footprints on the moon will most likely be there for at least 100 million years.
  • If two types of the same metal touch together in space, they will instantly bond together.
